Licensed Child Care Home vs. Registered Childcare Home

  • Licensed- able to care for up to 12 children at one time. All children may be under the
age of 5, but if you have 18  month- 3 yr olds in care  you can only have up to 8 total, and
the remaining 4 children must be the at least 4 years.
  • Registered- able to care for 12 children also, but 6 MUST be school aged children.

A Licensed Child Care Home is  visited more often than a registered child care home.

Some other differences lie in the process of getting registered vs. licensed. Any child care
operator can become licensed ,depending on the
experience level of the director, or the level
of
education they have. The main difference in becoming licensed vs. being a registered
home daycare lies in the difference of just that.
The amount of EXPERIENCE or EDUCATION.

All Information can be found on the Texas Department of Family Protective Services Website
under Standards and Regulations.

Being licensed does not  mean the daycare is better than any registered home. It is just a
label; but the main difference lies in the child ratio and visits occurring more often than that of a
registered home. **Note** These are not word for word standards but are similar to exact
words.
